Card Critter

Authenticity guarantee

Every card is genuine, or your money back

Fakes are getting better, especially chase Pokémon cards. Here’s how we check every card before it’s listed, and how to spot a fake yourself.

How to spot a fake card

What we check (and what you can too)

  1. 01

    Compare to a reference

Line it up against a known-genuine image of the same printing: border width, card number, set symbol and colours.

  2. 02

    Check the text and font

Fakes often get the font weight, spacing or energy symbols slightly wrong, and typos are a giveaway.

  3. 03

    Look at the print

Under magnification, genuine cards show a fine rosette dot pattern. Fakes often look blurry or too smooth.

  4. 04

    Feel the card stock

Genuine cards have a stiff, layered core and a slight sheen. Fakes are often too glossy, too thin or too flexible.

  5. 05

    The light test

Shine a phone torch through it. Genuine cards let through very little light; many fakes glow.

  6. 06

    Holo and texture

Full arts and SIRs have a texture you can feel and a holo pattern that moves. Fakes are often flat and glossy.
